Pet Passport

PET PASSPORT

PETS was originally introduced for the benefit of animals entering or returning to the United Kingdom from other European Union countries, since historically the UK had very strong controls to safeguard against Rabies including a compulsory 6 month quarantine period on imports of many animals. On October 1, 2001, several European Union countries introduced the PETS scheme, under which animals from any member country may freely travel (with the correct procedure) to any other member country on approved carriers. Over time the scheme has rolled out to other countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

You are responsible for ensuring that your dog meets all the rules for entering the UK under the Pet Travel Scheme. Make sure that you have had the procedures carried out in the correct order and that your dog’s documentation is correctly completed. If you do not, your dog may not be able to enter the country or may have to be licensed into quarantine on arrival. This will mean delay and cost you money not to mention the stress for your dog and for yourself.

Leaving the UK for another EU country such as Spain is very easy as nobody, from our experience, checks the PET PASSPORT. You will be required however to pay for your dog(s) to travel through the Channel Tunnel or on the ferry to another EU Country, but if you want to return to the UK then this is a completely different matter.

Thirty days after the initial Rabies Vaccination, your dog MUST have a blood test to ensure that the rabies antibody titre is equal to or more than 0.5IU/ml. Your Pet Passport will be stamped accordingly along with the microchip no.

It is from THIS date that once 6 calendar months have passed then you are able to travel BACK to the UK from an EU country along with a valid Tick and Tapeworm Treatment administered by a Vet and stamped into the Passport – a Tick Collar is not acceptable and the treatment for Tapeworm must contain Praziquantel.  You are allowed between 24 and 48 hours from the date that this treatment was applied, providing your Rabies vaccination has been kept up to date, to leave an EU country and enter the UK. If you should let your Rabies Vaccination elapse then YOU WILL HAVE TO START FROM SCRATCH WHICH IN TURN MEANS MORE EXPENSE!   Every year when your dog receives the Rabies Vaccination, you will be provided with a tag for your dog’s collar.  This will give, in detail, the year your dog was vaccinated against Rabies and will be colour coded accordingly.
