THE HANGING OF DOGS

The hanging of dogs is referred to as a cultural tradition, actually it is pure, barbaric cruelty, which dates back generations because in most areas of Spain it is legal to dispose of unwanted dogs in this manner. In particular the Galgos, better known to us as Greyhounds. 

These beautiful, gentle dogs are used to satisfy the Spanish hobby of Hare coursing.  It is the belief that 50 per cent of these Galgos die by the age of two having lived in dire conditions with inadequate and insufficient food, being raced over many miles and never receiving treatment for any injuries that they may receive. 

Unbelievably they are hung in accordance to how well they have served their owners. Another words, if the dog has done well it is hung from higher up in the tree so that death comes more quickly.  If a dog has dared not to perform well then it is hung from a lower branch where they die an agonisingly slow death.

The Spanish even have a name for these poor souls - Piano Players because their front legs scrabble at the air in their desperate attempts to avoid choking during their terrifying last moments.  The men will often sit around in groups, laughing and talking and sharing a drink whilst watching this obscene atrocity.

But this tradition of disposing of unwanted Galgos extends to many other dogs like the Podenco, Pharaoh Hound and cross breeds. Hunters, Farmers and Goat herders apply the same sinister disposal method. Many are shot but an awful lot more are hung.  This year, due to the economic crisis in Spain, many more have suffered this way.

Most autonomic regions of Spain have their own legislation for Animal Protection although these are well out of date and do not comply with the European standard.  If animal abuse is reported and it is found that prosecution is necessary the authorities act so slowly if at all, so action is very rarely taken.  It’s hardly surprising then that animal abuse in Spain exists to the level that it does.
