CARCAIXENT, SPAIN
Never has a story made such an impact on me; never have I cried so much for such a beautiful girl; never will I forget her or her story.
I first read about Regina in June ‘08, shortly after her life was ended by evil creatures who consider themselves as human beings. Regina was a 5 year old Mastiff cross and was rescued by the Protectora de Animales de la Ribera, “Ribercan” in Carcaixent, Valencia. It took a while for the carers of the shelter to gain her trust as she was easily frightened. But gradually she realised that these people were there to care for her and love her until a permanent home could be found and finally she rewarded them for their patience by allowing them to stroke her and she’d honour them by giving them little, tentative kisses. She was such a gentle dog who didn’t have a bad bone in her body.
29th May 2008 is a day that none of the people associated with this shelter will ever forget, a day where the memories of seeing such a terrible, cruel act of violence as they arrived for work will haunt them for the rest of their lives.
As with so many shelters in Spain “Ribercan” was not able to provide protection through the night. No one knows how many vile perpetrators were involved but they destroyed several fences to get inside and then proceeded to open the pens which is when they came across Regina. She was too scared to run and they pulled her outside where her legs were tied with wire, she was sexually abused and she had fruit forced into her anal orifice. If this wasn’t enough she was then struck many times on her head until she passed away in a pool of blood.
This story became global news and when Paula from California read about Regina it broke her heart. So much so, she felt compelled to take on the role of being her human Mom and set up a special memorial page for her www.rainbowsbridge.com/residents/REGIN001/Resident.htm a place where she is totally loved. The song “Justice for Regina” was especially written and sung by the wonderful Maria Daines. Please take a look, it’s wonderful, especially the Guest Book.
On the first anniversary of Regina’s death, this year, there was a massive email protest sent out to all those dignitaries who stood by, shrugged their shoulders and did nothing. No efforts were ever made to investigate the brutal killing of an innocent animal. They may forget but we never will.

WARNING!
The following photographs were taken of Regina when she was found, apart from the first one which is how she looked before her life was cruelly taken away from her. Be warned that if you scroll down further you will find them upsetting but they show the depths of depravity some people will go to. Completely and utterly senseless. She did absolutely nothing to deserve it.
